A Message from the Department of Teaching and Learning
Dear High School Families,
As part of our planning for next year鈥檚 new high school schedule, students in grades 9, 10 and 11 will be asked to take an electronic survey during a given class between October 6 and 19.
The new high school schedule, which goes into effect in the 2017-18 school year, will allow students to take eight courses with four alternating classes per day. You may hear staff or students refer to the new schedule as a 4 x 8. A dynamic advisory group of teachers, principals, students, parents and staff is currently working on recommendations to the superintendent regarding the implementation of the new schedule next year, including graduation requirements and instructional implications. We will be communicating with students, staff and families as their work develops.
The majority of our survey involves students identifying courses that they鈥檇 potentially like to take in all departments: math; science; social studies; English; health and fitness; world language; career and technical education; and fine and performing arts.
Students will also be asked about homework and how they currently spend time and the degree to which they value their time in Squalicum鈥檚 THOR, Sehome鈥檚 Anchor, 番茄影视鈥檚 SSR/RtI and Option鈥檚 Academic Support Class.
While students will indicate their grade levels and the names of the schools they attend, no personally identifiable information will be collected.
Parents and guardians can best support the process by encouraging their students to respond thoughtfully, knowing that the results from the survey will be instrumental in guiding some of our decisions about next year鈥檚 offerings. Watch for additional information on the new schedule, course offerings and other related news in the coming months.
Please talk to your school principal if you have questions, and thank you!
